Roy Kok - CEO, Smart-Ship B.V.

Roy has a passion for technology and innovation. He received his bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering in July 2015 from Delft University of Technology, after which he continued with a double degree master program consisting of Offshore and Dredging Engineering, combined with the master program Biomechanical Design - focused on human machine interaction.

After receiving his master’s degree with a mark of excellence, Roy founded Smart-Ship in September 2018. Smart-Ship is a company that aims to revolutionize ship control.

Today Smart-Ship is developing a range of haptic controls for simulators, small fast ships, offshore and dredging vessels. Roy believes that applying haptics on the controls of vessels will increase operator performance and awareness, thereby making maritime operations safer, easier and more efficient.

Using Haptics on Vessel Controls to Improve Performance and Safety

Dutch startup Smart-Ship together with the Maritime Research Institute (MARIN) and the Royal Netherlands Navy is developing haptic feedback controls that aim to mitigate the damage sustained when sailing in high wave conditions. Haptic feedback (or force-feedback) is based on sensors in the skin and muscles that inform about body orientation, forces and vibrations making use of reflexes. Thereby it can provide a fast and intuitive way to transfer critical information on shock, impacts and environmental conditions to the operators of small fast ships. Using haptic feedback the operator’s awareness about body and surroundings can be significantly increased.

In recent months a prototype was developed and tested in a realistic boat simulator environment situated at MARIN. Together with a group of senior small fast ship instructors a first round of tests was conducted on the FSSS motion based simulator. During the NEXT GEN Shock Mitigation Workshop the experiments and preliminary results of this research will be presented. The aim is to spark a discussion on how haptic feedback could contribute towards making operations safer and more efficient. For example, by combining haptics with existing developments and solutions.
