Workshop Lead – John Haynes

From running Energy Transition training for

significant maritime organisations it is clear there is

an urgent need to have a better understanding of safety

for onboard and onshore energy storage systems.

The initial focus for Lithium-ion batteries has been on

the various chemistries and energy density.

It is now essential to establish a consistent approach

to identify safe battery-electric systems.

'Safety' for battery-electric vessels is not only about

high performance batteries. A systems approach considers

charging, awareness of the risk of running out of energy

at sea - along with the ability to prevent and fight fire.

Paleblue batteries use modern lithium-ion chemistry for fast charging and true 1.5V performance without a dedicated charging station. Based in Utah USA, Paleblue are displacing the need for 10 million single use batteries which are thrown away every day in the US alone. Taking the charger off the wall and putting it into the battery offers improved performance, reliability and ease of use. The onboard Battery Management System manages charging, perforamnce and safety. Paleblue is under contract with the US DOD to develop a next generation standard battery for US and allied forces.
